I love tall buildings, especially the towers, so one year ago, when the construction of the Tokyo Sky Tree tower was started, I was enthusiastic.

Today, I went in Sumida to see the site and the construction status and I discovered that the progress is clearly visible. The tower will be finished in December 2011, and 70 of the 610 meters are already built.

Tokyo Sky Tree progress report

Amazing! I can't wait to see it finished, it's going to be beautiful.

So the purpose is just basically to build a massive tower to look at Tokyo from the sky?

That's going to be quite the impressive tower when it's completed.:D And if Tokyo gets the 2016 olympic bid this will be another place for all the people that come, to see the great things that there is to be seen.Keep up the great work!

I love to see these tall towers going up also. I don't like the name they picked for this tower however.

@Hikaru Kazushime: There's also another purpose, the tower will support TV broadcasting antennas.

@Tornadoes28: I agree, the name is not the best choice...

@James: Tokyo Tower will became more like a "historical" landmark :p :D

Agree with Tornadoes, the name blows. I remember when they actually had a public vote on which name should go with it. If I remember correctly, there were 5 names, Sky Tree being the lamest.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the tower itself. Be sure to get some photos when it reaches the halfway point of completion, which will put it at the same height as Tokyo Tower.

Yes, there were 6 names proposed:
- Tokyo Edo Tower
- Tokyo Sky Tree
- Mirai Tree
- Yume Miyagura
- Rising East Tower
- Rising Tower
and the "Sky Tree" won by a huge margin...

Very nice photos. Thanks for going to the effort.

I'd like to suugest that you date them, though.

The tower is about four times as tall as pictured, as of now (Dec. 20, 09) so it's not exactly a progress report.

Last height I saw said 270 meters, about 2 weeks ago. Before too long the first observation tower at 350 meters will start being constructed.

Please come back again for some more shots.

My wife and I live at the tower's base, and get an increasingly neck-wrenching view from our apartment balcony.
