The Day of Gundam

Today is the anniversary day of Gundam, the hugely popular Japanese franchise.
Everything started exactly 30 years ago, on 7th April 1979, as a TV anime series Mobile Suit Gundam (ファーストガンダム - Kidou Senshi Gandamu), developed by Yoshiyuki Tomino at Sunrise Studios.

The name “Gundam” developed from the initial name “Freedom Fighter Gunboy” by adding the last part of “Freedom” to form “Gundom” and finally Gundam as to suggest the power of a “dam".

A milestone in the Japanese animation development (Gundam is considered the start of the real robot genre), it’s an interesting fact that initially the TV series wasn’t a success and it was canceled. The popularity raised on reruns, and by now, with 11 lengthy TV series, 14 movies, 9 original video animations, and an ever growing number of video games, spanning 7 different storylines, it’s hard to describe in a few words the complex of anime, manga, novels and games, evaluated last year at 50 billion Yen trademark.

Gundam became a cultural icon in Japan, used on stamps, official posters, even as a code-name for military equipment. The franchise even inspired the scientific world, with a Gundam Academy established last year. There is also a bronze Gundam statue, raised in Suginami-ku by the residents, where Gundam also is a representation of the God of War Hachiman.

Astăzi este a 30-a aniversare Gundam, una dintre cele mai mari şi mai populare serii anime. Totul a început exact acum 30 de ani, pe 7 aprilie 1979, cu seria anime Mobile Suit Gundam (機動戦士ガンダム - Kidou Senshi Gandamu), creată de Yoshiyuki Tomino la studiourile Sunrise.

Numele Gundam s-a format din combinaţia unor silabe din prima variantă de titlu, “Freedom Fighter Gunboy” plus ultima silabă din “Freedom", rezultând “Gundom", denumire schimbată apoi în Gundam, pentru a sugera puterea unui baraj (dam).

Considerat ca fiind începutul unui ere în animaţia japoneză (real robot), este interesant faptul că iniţial serialul TV nu a fost un succes, fiind anulat înainte de termen. Popularitatea şi-a căpătat-o abia după reluări. Până în prezent s-au realizat 11 serii TV, 14 filme, 9 OVA (original video animations) şi foarte multe jocuri video, devenind o marcă evaluată anul trecut la 50 miliarde yeni (500 milioane $).

Gundam a devenit un simbol pentru Japonia, a fost utilizat pe timbre, postere oficiale, ca nume de cod pentru echipamente militare şi de curând a fost înfiinţată chiar şi o academie care îi poartă numele.
În Suginami-ku, locuitorii au construit o statuie de bronz Gundam, acesta fiind şi una din reprezentările zeului războiului Hachiman, căruia oamenii de afaceri îi aduc ofrande înaintea întâlnirilor de afaceri.
