Tenin şi tennyo în Mouryou no Hako

În primul episod din Mouryou no Hako se face referire la nuvela Tennin Gosui (The Decay of the Angel), scrisă de Yukio Mishima. Tennin sunt fiinţe celeste, asemănătoare îngerilor, originare din mitologia vedică, unde sunt întâlnite cu numele de apsaras, preluate ulterior şi de budism.
Yoriko Kusumoto spune, în episodul 4, că ea crede că “Yuzuki Kanako nu a murit, ci a devenit tennyo, după accident s-a trasformat în crisalidă şi apoi s-a ridicat la cer, ca un fluture, ca un înger". Tennyo sunt o categorie de tennin, fecioare celeste, reprezentate sub forma unor femei frumoase care trăiesc în cer, sunt invizibile pentru muritori, zboară şi cântă la biwa sau la flaut.
