@Muzachan I heard that Kamakura Daibutsu is very popular with foreigner tourists. I've never been to there, maybe someday soon.

I was there in 1954 and the face looked better than today. No holes in the face then. What happened?
12/09/09 @ 02:06
I've been there maybe 2-3 times and never get tired of it. As a Pure Land Buddhist myself, I find the place very inspiring, but also Kamakura as a whole is a cool place.

Thanks for sharing such excellent detail. There were a number of facts (like the 656 curls) I was not aware of. :)

@Billy: Thank you, Billy, I'm glad you like it! :)

@Carmen Henesy: Yes, it's more amazing when you stand right next to it! :)

@whipcracker: Thank you! ;)

@Abraham Lincoln: In 1960 a big consolidation work took place (I'll get into details in the today's article)... Maybe something happened then...

@Doug M: Thank you very much. I'm really glad you like it! :)

I remember taking a trip to Kamakura before Christmas in 1989 to help at an orphanage. While we were there, we took a side trip to see the Great Buddha. I think one of the things that amazed me most is reading about how a tsunami washed over the area sometime in the past. Considering the distance and height from/above the ocean, that was pretty impressive.
