Less visitors at Ueno Zoo

Two years ago, when I visited the Ueno Zoo, I was amazed by the huge attraction that was the giant panda Ling Ling. To see him, I waited several minutes and it was so crowded that I could barely move (I was able to take some pictures though, but only from one angle).
I recently found out (via Japan Probe) that after the death of Ling Ling (of old age), the number of visitors at Ueno Zoo diminished greatly and the panda related merchandise isn’t selling anymore. I don’t really understand this reaction, the Zoo has a huge number of interesting animals and I’m looking forward to visit it again this summer.
