Hokora

Hokora are small shrines, dedicated to the local kami.
They can be built as auxiliary facilities, next to regular shrines, like the one in this photo, near the Futarasan Shrine, in Nikko:
… or like this one, photographed near the Hato Mori Hachiman Shrine:
Also, they can be built along roadsides, at crossroads or near bridges, like this one, near the Shinkyo, in Nikko:
…or even near houses (photo from the Edo Tokyo Open Air Museum).
