Favorite Japan places - Toshougu Shrine Ueno
By Muza-chan on Jun 1, 2009 | In Photo, Japan, English | Send feedback »
I visited the Toshougu Shrine from Ueno on a hot July day, guided by my friend Naoki.
Into the inner courtyard, next to the main building, it was a little shady so I was able to take some photos. Here I am, photographed by Naoki, while I was taking the next photo.
At the time, this shrine was the most richly decorated I have seen and I was fascinated by the combination of colors. Several days after that, I visited the Toshougu Shrine from Nikko.

Did you know - The Dragons from the Karamon Gate
By Muza-chan on May 12, 2009 | In Did you know..., English | 2 feedbacks »
At the Toshougu Shrine in Ueno, on the Karamon Gate, an arched gate built in Chinese style, there are two dragons carved by Hidari Jingoro, a renowned sculptor from the Edo period.
One dragon is ascending to Heaven (Noboriyu) and one is descending (Kudariyu).
The legend says that when the night comes, the dragons are going to drink water from the nearby Shinobazu Pond.

Less visitors at Ueno Zoo
By Muza-chan on Apr 6, 2009 | In Japan, English | Send feedback »
Two years ago, when I visited the Ueno Zoo, I was amazed by the huge attraction that was the giant panda Ling Ling. To see him, I waited several minutes and it was so crowded that I could barely move (I was able to take some pictures though, but only from one angle).
I recently found out (via Japan Probe) that after the death of Ling Ling (of old age), the number of visitors at Ueno Zoo diminished greatly and the panda related merchandise isn’t selling anymore. I don’t really understand this reaction, the Zoo has a huge number of interesting animals and I’m looking forward to visit it again this summer.
Old and new photos - Shinobazu pond

I like to study photo albums with old photos, many of them are good resources on photo composition.
Yesterday, one photo from Japanese Old Photographs In Bakumatsu-Meiji Period draw my attention, the Shinobazu pond from Ueno, filled with blossoming lotuses.
After a century, the landscape changed, but the lake is still the same…

Did you know... the lanterns at Toshougu shrine
By Muza-chan on Mar 24, 2009 | In Did you know..., English | Send feedback »
There are 50 large copper lanterns at the Toshougu Shrine in Ueno, offered by daimyo (feudal lords) during the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The name of the daimyo that donated it is writen on the base of each lantern.
The copper lanterns aren’t used for lighting, they are used in religious ceremonies for purification and for sacred fires.
